Sunny Side Up
The difference between homegrown eggs & shop bought!
My hens haven't been laying lately as they have been moulting & it's been dark & cold so I have had to buy eggs....organic ones of course.
One of our old girls, Hermione, who is going on 8 years old, has just started to lay again & when I cooked some eggs I could see how different & how much bigger they are compared to even the "best" shop bought eggs. The two bright orange yolked eggs are Hermione's & the paler yellow one on the left is from the shop. There is no comparison in taste either!

I have to agree with you on how our own chook eggs taste so much better than any shop boughts, but yesterday Martina had the salmon skin from our previous evenings supper, and her freshly laid egg this morning had a distinctly fishy tase to it!!
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you, have a lovely weekend
xx
My friend Heather always let me have eggs her hens have laid. There is definitely a difference - they are much much nicer

Egg-tastic! I'd love to get a few chickens as I used to have Rhode Island Reds when I was a child. However, Husband still hasn't made the chicken house yet!
ReplyDeleteQuite agree Jayne, once you've had eggs from your own hens there is no going back to shop bought ones, the look and taste don't compare. We too have had to buy organic shop bought ones as our old girls aren't laying either at the moment.

Yes, we used to keep hens and the eggs are def much tastier. You can see it with yours! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteI Have to say i guessed which were your own just by the colour, and your so right theres even a huge difference in taste between shop free range eggs than buying them off the farm. enjoy your lovely eggs, dee x
ReplyDeleteCould not agree more. We had a little flurry of eggs at Christmas but nothing since. Must say though that we were quite impressed with free range eggs we got in Asda of all places, very fresh indeed and very deep yellow yolks. Looking forward to spring when the eggs start popping out faster than we can eat them! Jane xx
ReplyDeleteYou can't beat a fresh "home grown" egg for colour and taste.
ReplyDeleteWaitrose Burford browns are pretty good but so expensive....looking forward to the Spring glut when the local farmer sells his wonderful eggs at the side of the road for a lot less....

I agree. I would love to have my one chickens
ReplyDeleteOur are back to laying again....... thank goodness. No comparison between what the shops sell and the "real McCoy".
ReplyDeleteI think it would be wonderful to have fresh laid eggs. I've also found organic milk to be much better tasting in my tea and on granola.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like your Vintage Jumble will be great. Your blog photos are all lovely.
Oh how I wish my other half would let me get some hens. We have the space etc - he is being stubborn. We are looking for somewhere with a bit of land however and the deal is - if we move - I get some chickens and maybe even look at goats :)
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I loved your shelf from Gloucester. We go there sometimes. I think I preferred it before they moved, but it's still always a treat...

I live in the country so there is always a good supply of fresh eggs. One of my neighbours keeps chickens, my husband chops logs for them and we are 'paid' with fresh eggs. My other neighbour has Ducks and we often find a box left on our doorstep if they have too many. They are the best eggs ever.
ReplyDeleteDo you cook your eggs directly on the Aga? Ive never thought of doing that.
