Daffadown-Dilly

Daffodils are one of my most favourite flowers - their bright yellowness really cheers up grey days with the promise of spring. Cheap & very cheerful!

The egg cups in the picture above are lovely aren't they? They are going to be appearing in my shop one of these days - very Cath Kidston colours don't you think?
Eggs are courtesy of my hens.

Vintage sugar bowls make lovely little planters for spring bulbs.

"Daffodown-dilly" in the title refers to the old rhyme describing a daffodil which I loved as a child.

"Daffadown-dilly is come up to town,
In a yellow petticoat and a green gown"

The photo below was taken last year - a reminder of things to come.

Which is your favourite spring flower?

DAFFODILS BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced, but they
Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee;
A poet could not be but gay,
In such a jocund company!
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

  4. Its got to be daffs - a mix of that sunny yellow and the fact that when they are in bloom the warm weather is almost here :)

  5. My favourite spring flower of them all is the humble little Primrose, but, unfortunately, it's also my chickens' favourite snack and they've all been eaten.........!!

  8. I love the planters you have those daffs in. You're right, daffodils are a lovely flower, they bring cheeriness and hope I always think. They grow wild on our garden and it's swimming with them during the lambing. I'll post photos when they're out.

  11. Ooh, that's lovely Jayne, I have an urge to go out and buy some daffs now. We were amazed to see them all fully out in Dorset at the weekend. I've just been to the garden centre for some primulas for my pots by my front door. It's a gorgeous, if cold, day here. I love the scent of narcicssi but I think my fave Spring flowers would have to be hyacinths for their exuberant colours. There's a feature on them in Country Homes mag this month and they look gorgeous. Now if only I could stop them flopping over..!

  14. Hi Jayne
    I plant hyacinths in sugar bowls and plant them out when finished, lots of people throw them out as they don't realise that they can be planted.
    I bought my valentines flowers today,although I prefer English flowers, in Morrisons they had a bunch of jewel coloured tulips for £5, they are so bright and springlike, and now Michael doesn't have to bother bringing me the horrible flourescent petrol station chrysanths!
    Only joking!
