Fledglings

Yesterday was a milestone for the Cottage nest as the first of our chicks stretched her wings & flew south to start her university course. We filled up the car with her necessities (which I must say was quite a lot!) & drove her to her temporary new home.
After unloading & unpacking we had to leave for the drive home again & as we left I felt as if we were abandoning her!

We want her to have a wonderful & exciting time & I'm trying to be brave but I will miss her so much....the nest is feeling a little emptier today than it has been for the last 19 years.

Good luck Sweetpea!

  1. Hey! Don't be so wistful! Somebody I know started Senior School recently with a lovely "cupcake" bag (made by your fledgeling). It houses her "communication" folder. I nearly did a post about the threads that connect the two girls, both having new starts at the beginning of term. Your daughter will have a wonderful creative time! :O)My charge's older sister went north to start University on Saturday and as we all tried cramming and ramming the "stuff" in the car we laughed knowing that this was going on in houses/on drives all over Britain!

  2. It must feel like that once they've gone off to university etc. I'm sure I won't enjoy that moment. My 2 are still at primary, so a little while to go yet!

  4. I know how you must be feeling but she's a girl and will keep in touch regularly I'm sure (unlike boys!). You won't be far from each other's thoughts all the time. Do you know Cecil Day Lewis' poem 'Walking Away'. It is here http://www.cday-lewis.co.uk/#/walking-away/4525050890 and brings a tear to my eye evry time I read it (be warned!) but it does sum up what we've been doing bringing up our children to be independent.

  5. Mine's started her college, but still living at home. Makes me feel lucky, but also means whenever she does leave it'll be even worse.

  6. My parents affectionately complain about my still living at home but they know how hard it will be when I do move as I've been there so long!

  9. It must feel strange for you. I don't look forward to that day. I have a few more years left before I experience that so am making the most of my daughter in the meantime. I hear so many say how fast they grow and how quickly they fly the nest.
Your daughter will be fine and will appreciate her times back at home all the more during the holidays.
    Take care

  11. Good luck to your daughter and to you too! I was 19 when I left home, my daughter is almost 16 now...I just don't want to think about that! I can imagine a little how you feel, that's the way things go but...

  13. Must be hard to see them go. Uni years were the best days of my life.
She will be eating you out of house and home again before you know it.
